From Feedback to Better Practice: Set a Micro-Goal with TheraMentor's AI Mentor
Turn therapy simulation feedback into one observable training goal using TheraMentor’s AI Mentor and Progress tracking.
By TheraMentor ·

You've completed a simulated session and read the feedback. It highlights empathy, active listening or the pacing of your interventions. Yet the next time you practise, you may not remember what you intended to change. This is a familiar training gap: feedback does not automatically translate into a new behaviour.
Why a general intention is not enough
“I want to become a better therapist” may be meaningful, but it is too broad for a short practice task. A more useful learning goal describes an observable choice: “In this role-play, I will try to acknowledge emotion before asking a second exploratory question.”
The concept of deliberate practice involves targeted rehearsal, feedback and iteration. Systematic reviews suggest preliminary value for practising discrete skills while stressing that psychotherapy-specific evidence remains limited and heterogeneous.
The one-skill, three-attempt plan
Instead of trying to fix five things at once, use a short cycle:
Attempt one — Observe. Complete a brief simulated session. Note one response you would keep and one you would revise. Do not choose a learning target solely because the AI assigned a low score.
Attempt two — Change one thing. In another session, apply one improvement at a comparable moment. For example, try reflecting emotion before moving quickly into further questioning.
Attempt three — Transfer. Practise the same skill with a different persona. If the skill only appears when you have memorized a specific dialogue, the learning may be too narrow.
Connect AI Mentor and Progress in TheraMentor
TheraMentor describes an AI Mentor for guided reflection and identifying patterns, alongside progress tracking. You can use these tools together:
- After a session, read the feedback and add one observation of your own.
- With the AI Mentor, discuss one training target rather than asking for a global judgement of you as a therapist.
- Translate the target into a concrete action: “I will reflect a possible emotion before changing the topic.”
- Complete two further practice attempts and compare what you actually said, not just the numbers on the Progress screen.
- If the AI's interpretation conflicts with your professional reasoning, document the disagreement and discuss it with a qualified human supervisor when needed.
What counts as progress?
A higher score may reflect increased familiarity with the tool, an easier scenario or a genuine change in your response. On its own, it does not demonstrate improved real-world clinical performance. Stronger educational evidence is being able to describe what you changed, why you changed it and how it worked across more than one scenario.
Make a practice appointment with yourself
Use three short TheraMentor simulations to work on the same micro-skill. Let AI Mentor and Progress organize your reflection—not certify professional competence. Development becomes more meaningful when you can explain it using examples.
